Debian offers on its repositories and installs by default only Firefox ESR. Firefox ESR (Extended Support Release) is a version of the Mozilla browser with greater stability than the “normal” version of the browser. Its major versions (with the addition of new features) are only released once a year, while the normal version has several each year. But it has extensive support that covers the period between two releases plus a few extra weeks. But, it is possible to have the normal version of Firefox on Debian. Here are two ways to have it.
Method 1: Install the standard version of Firefox on Debian with Flatpak
In my opinion, this is a simple solution to install the standard version of Firefox on Debian since Firefox is available as Flatpak on the Flathub. But, some extensions communicating with other applications (keepassxc-browser, kee, ...) may no longer work.
For those who do not know, Flatpak is an independent system for the secure and easy management and distribution of Linux applications and packages. Several Linux distributions integrate it directly (Fedora, Linux Mint, Debian-Facile,…). It is also possible to enjoy it easily on Debian.
Installing Firefox in Flatpak format on Debian
Then, in a terminal, to install the standard version of Firefox, do:
flatpak install flathub org.mozilla.firefox
Optionally, it can also be installed from the Gnome Software or KDE Discover software managers if they have access to Flathub.
Launch of Firefox in Flatpak format
You will find a launcher in your application menu next to the Firefox ESR launcher.
Otherwise, you can run it with the command:
flatpak run org.mozilla.firefox
Firefox update in Flatpak format
With a new version of the browser, it will be updated with the updates of the Flatpak packages.
Uninstalling Firefox in Flatpak format
To uninstall Firefox, do:
flatpak remove org.mozilla.firefox
or go through the Gnome Software or Discover (KDE) package managers
Method 2: Install the standard version of Firefox on Debian from the Mozilla installer
If you go to the Firefox site, you can download an archive containing the files to run software.
Unzip the file to install Firefox on Debian
To use these files, you have to unzip them in:
/ opt (system folder which requires admin rights to write to it). Then, the browser will be accessible by all user accounts of the system.
cd / opt && sudo tar xjf /path/to/firefox-*.tar.bz2
/ path / to is to be adapted
or in your home folder: the browser will then only be accessible by your user
cd ~ && tar xjf /path/to/firefox-*.tar.bz2
/ path / to is to be adapted
Then you can delete the archive:
rm path / to / firefox - *. tar.bz2
/ path / to is to be adapted
Creation of the Firefox launcher
Once the file is decompressed, you must create a launcher (shortcut) to open it. To create the launcher, create with your favorite text editor, for example on the desktop, a firefox-stable.desktop file containing the following lines:
if Firefox is in / opt
[Desktop Entry]
Name = Firefox Stable
Comment = Web Browser
Exec = / opt / firefox / firefox% u
Terminal = false
Type = Application
Icon = / opt / firefox / browser / chrome / icons / default / default128.png
Categories = Network; WebBrowser;
MimeType = text / html; text / xml; application / xhtml + xml; application / xml; application / vnd.mozilla.xul + xml; application / rss + xml; application / rdf + xml; image / gif; image / jpeg; image / png; x-scheme-handler / http; x-scheme-handler / https;
StartupNotify = true
or if it's in your home folder
[Desktop Entry]
Name = Firefox Stable
Comment = Web Browser
Exec = ~ / firefox / firefox% u
Terminal = false
Type = Application
Icon = ~ / firefox / browser / chrome / icons / default / default128.png
Categories = Network; WebBrowser;
MimeType = text / html; text / xml; application / xhtml + xml; application / xml; application / vnd.mozilla.xul + xml; application / rss + xml; application / rdf + xml; image / gif; image / jpeg; image / png; x-scheme-handler / http; x-scheme-handler / https;
StartupNotify = true
Then copy this file to:
/ usr / share / applications to appear in the menu of all system users (requires admin rights)
sudo cp /path/to/firefox-stable.desktop / usr / share / applications
/ path / to / is to be adapted
or ~ / .local / share / applications to appear only in your user's menu
cp /path/to/firefox-stable.desktop ~ / .local / share / applications
/ path / to / is to be adapted
Firefox update
With a new version of the browser, the update will be done through the browser.
Uninstalling Firefox
To uninstall Firefox thus installed, all you have to do is delete the previously unzipped folder:
sudo rm -R / opt / firefox
or
rm -R ~ / firefox
and its launchers:
sudo rm /usr/share/applications/firefox-stable.desktop
or
rm ~ / .local / share / applications / firefox-stable.desktop
