Here I offer two easy methods to directly install the latest version of Skype on Debian. These methods all allow you to keep your version of Skype up to date in the future. They all have their advantages, so none is better than the other. It is up to you to make your choice.
Prerequisite
Have a 64-bit version of Dedian. For those with 32 Bits, it is possible to use Skype Web from the Chromium browser (not compatible with Firefox ESR).
To find out its architecture (32 or 64 bits), open a terminal and do:
uname -m
if in response you have x86_64, your system is 64 bit. But if it's i686 or i386, it's 32 bit. So not compatible for Skype…
uname -m on Debian 64 bits
Method 1: Install Skype on Debian in Debian Format
Debian does not offer any Debian package for Skype from its official repositories. Normal, Skype is proprietary software of Microsoft. But the latter offers a repository to install and update Skype which it maintains directly.
In fact, the Skype installer, downloadable from their site, adds this repository to the package sources during installation. Thus, the software is kept up to date with the other packages in the distribution.
But instead I suggest you add the repository to Debian sources ourselves and install Skype directly from it.
Its installation requires you to have an administrator account.
To do this, open a terminal. Add the APT key from the Skype repository:
wget -q https://repo.skype.com/data/SKYPE-GPG-KEY -O- | sudo apt-key add -
Then add the Skype repository to the list of your package sources:
echo "deb [arch = amd64] https://repo.skype.com/deb stable main" | sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/skypeforlinux.list
And update your sources cache:
sudo apt update
So, install Skype with the command:
sudo apt install skypeforlinux
Finally, to launch it, you will find a shortcut with other applications or use the command:
skypeforlinux
Method 2: Install Skype on Debian in Flatpak format
A quick tour of Flatpak
The Flatpak format is a recent format which has several advantages:
Installing a Flatpak package will not necessarily require you to have an administrator account.
She is agnostic to the cast and her condition. Indeed, the libraries necessary for its operation are included in the package.
and the installed application runs in a sandbox which isolates it from the rest of the system and increases security.
But, on the other hand, an application in Flatpak format could take a little more space on the hard drive once installed.
However, by default Debian does not support this format, but the necessary packages are available on the distribution repositories. More detail in the tutorial: How to Install and use Flatpak on Debian. But, if you are using Debian-Facile 10.5 or LMDE 4 distributions, they already natively support this format.
Installing Skype in Flatpak format on Debian does not require Administrator rights.
Installing Skype in Flatpak format from the software manager
You must have integrated the flatpak format into the Gnome Software or KDE Discover software manager and added the FlatHub (Flatpak package repository) as a source. Then Skype can be installed from the software manager by choosing the corresponding package.
Installing Skype in Flatpak format from the command line
Do in a terminal:
flatpak install flathub com.skype.Client
or if you haven't added Flathub as a source, do:
flatpak install --from https://flathub.org/repo/appstream/com.skype.Client.flatpakref
And here it is
Finally, you will find the launcher with the other applications. Otherwise, you can run it from the command line with:
flatpak run com.skype.Client
Uninstall Skype on Debian
You can go through your software manager to remove Skype from your computer. Otherwise, do it from the command line:
For Skype installed in Debian format, do:
sudo apt remove skypeforlinux
And for Skype installed in Flatpak format, do:
flatpak uninstall com.skype.Client
